Diversity Scholar Spotlight - Q&A with Ruby Boone
Ruby Boone graduated from Texas Tech University School of Law in May 2018. At Texas Tech, she served as Vice President of the Hispanic Law Student’s Association, Articles Editor for the Estate Planning and Community Property Law Journal, a Director on the Pro Bono Board, and participated in the ADR clinic and Civil Practice Clinic. She also received The Elma Moreno Award given to the graduating pro bono student of the year.
Ruby is the youngest of six siblings and was the first in her family to attend and graduate from college. She grew up in a small town in Texas and says, “I am very proud of where I come from and believe that my past has made me a stronger person.” Ruby therefore, plans to return to her hometown and begin her career there, where she envisions using her legal education to help those in need.

I was the Vice President of the Hispanic Law Student's Association, Articles Editor for the Estate Planning and Community Property Law Journal, sat as a Director on the Pro Bono Board, and participated in the ADR clinic and Civil Practice Clinic. I was also awarded the Graduating Pro Bono Student of the Year Award (The Elma Moreno Award).

Where will you be working after graduation? What type of law will you be practicing?
Ruby
Victoria, Texas in the area I grew up practicing business, banking, and bankruptcy law.

Where do you to see yourself professionally in 5 or 10 years from now?
Ruby
I hope I find myself still giving back to the community and as a leader in the legal community in the Victoria area.

What do you do for fun? Tell us one fun or interesting non-law related thing about yourself.
Ruby
I love to play the bass clarinet and listen to a wide array of music. I also love anything on the water.

I am a first-generation college student and struggled navigating my way to get an education.

What is one thing you wish you had known before law school? Do you have any advice or book recommendations to incoming 1Ls to help them succeed or better handle the rigors of law school?
Ruby
I wish I would have taken more time for friends in law school! You will build great relationships in law school.

What was your favorite law school experience -- one you would suggest other students look into?
Ruby
My favorite experience was being in the Hispanic Law Student's Association.

Tell us about a volunteer organization you are involved with and why it’s important to you.
Ruby
I was a Director on the Pro Bono Board working on around 13 pro bono projects. Each one was very different in their own way, but altogether it was awesome to see other students engaged in the community.
